At the Australian International Marine Export Group’s Awards Gala last week at Sanctuary Cove, Sydney City Marine came away with the prestigious ACMG Commercial Marine Service Provider of the Year Award. It recognises service provision in the Australian commercial marine sector. On hand to collect the award were Sydney City Marine (SCM) Director, Brenton Fischer, and General Manager, Kym Fleet.

Fleet said of the win, “This award is a direct reflection on the focus of the directors, management, and staff to provide a higher level of service through out the marine industry. The directors have committed to raising the standard through ISO Accreditation with Lloyds Compliance, and will continue to strive to be the benchmark for safety and service within the marine industry.”

Located in Rozelle, and just under the Anzac Bridge immediately to the West of Sydney, SCM work on all manner of vessels from 6 to 60m in the expansive facility that includes two acres of undercover working space. It is also home to Australia’s largest climate controlled spray booth. SCM carefully manages manoeuvring the vessels around with a 45 tonne submersible trailer, a 100 tonne travelift with a seven-metre beam capacity, and also an 800 tonne shiplift.

ISO accreditation means SCM separates the clean work from the dirty, and takes safety very seriously, which is why achieving this award is testament to their efforts to raising the standards of the marine service industry overall. The facilities, staff and contractors include marine mechanics, engineering, electricians, riggers, antifouling, painting and shipwright services. So no matter whether your vessel is big or small, made from GRP, steel, timber, carbon, alloy, composite or a combination of these materials, the job will get done.

Those tasks include the annual spruce up, serious modification, cosmetic repairs or upgrades, and re-powering. SCM currently lifts 800 to 1000 vessels per annum, and in the last year, part of these were the 40 craft that were either over seven metres in beam or 100 tonnes in displacement, and utilised the shiplift. It is a lot of work for the 40 staff that includes six in management, six in the yard, eight on antifoul, 15 shipwrights and five engineers. Including the commercial tenants, there are around 20 contractors that cover Abrasive Blasting, Electrical, Rigging, Marine Mechanical, and painting.

“We turnaround the average recreational task in about four days, with our larger commercial work more like four weeks. Our hardstand has 30 bays for craft up to 45m and the marina can house 18 craft up to 60m. On any given day you will find us at about 75% occupancy, so there is always something happening, somewhere inside the SCM facility”, said Fleet.

“Our tug cradle has been purposely built to handle the 18 tugs that work between Wollongong and Newcastle. We also perform ongoing service works for Carnival Cruise Lines, carrying out survey requirements and upgrades, and yes, the cruise liners have now left for the winter!”

“Whilst we are delighted to receive recognition for the work we provide to the commercial sector of our industry, it is important to note that our size allows us to also separate away large recreational craft. Presently, we have a 92’ Predator, 78’ Fairline and 5800 Riviera all side by side, tucked away in another section of the yard”, said Fleet in closing.
